Grade 3
🌳 Grade 3 at Aldabra Academy
Deepening curiosity, building independence, and seeing systems in action.
At Aldabra Academy, Grade 3 learners begin to see how the world works on a broader scale. They investigate systems—natural, cultural, and mathematical—and start to recognize patterns in how people and places connect across time and space.
This year, students grow as readers, writers, problem-solvers, and young citizens. Through thoughtful, asynchronous “Learning Adventures,” they’re invited to explore meaningful questions, build essential academic skills, and take purposeful action in their local environment.
We ground all learning in the National Geographic Learning Framework, developing each student’s curiosity, observation, collaboration, and communication—while meeting key outcomes from both Alberta and BC curricula.
What to Expect:
-
🌿 Nature-Based Learning Prompts
Students explore how living things adapt, how weather and climate affect ecosystems, and how humans interact with the land. From plant dissections to daily weather logs to tree-mapping in their neighborhood, students learn science by observing it in the real world.
-
🧠 Core Skill Development (Literacy, Numeracy, Social-Emotional)
Grade 3 learners strengthen reading fluency and comprehension with fiction, nonfiction, and informational texts. They learn to write organized paragraphs, short stories, and informative texts, and they practice speaking clearly and confidently.
In math, students develop mastery of addition/subtraction strategies, begin multiplication and division, explore fractions, area, and perimeter, and use data to solve real-world problems. Problem-solving and pattern recognition are emphasized through open-ended, hands-on tasks.
-
🎒 Mini Learning Adventures
Each interdisciplinary unit follows a driving question aligned with curriculum outcomes and framed by real-world relevance. Sample adventures include:
-
“What Do Plants Need to Survive?” (Science + Writing + Math)
-
“How Have Communities Changed Over Time?” (Social Studies + Mapping + Oral Storytelling)
-
“What Stories Do Rocks Tell?” (Geology + Art + Research)
Students create reports, models, nature journals, timelines, maps, and creative projects to demonstrate understanding.
-
💬 Storytelling and Sharing
Learners are encouraged to present their findings using writing, diagrams, oral storytelling, and digital formats. They may write a travel brochure for a biome, create a weather broadcast video, or record a podcast-style reflection. These activities build confidence in communication and personal expression.
-
❤️ A Gentle Pace with Strengthening Independence
Grade 3 students begin to self-direct parts of their learning. With structured routines and clear guidance, they build stamina in completing multi-step tasks, managing time, and reflecting on their learning goals—all while enjoying a flexible pace suited to their development.
-
✨ Parent Support Every Step of the Way
Families receive easy-to-follow weekly guides, printable activity pages, curated video lessons, and optional enrichment ideas. We also offer weekly live sessions, collaborative class projects, and each week, students are invited to attend live “office hour” sessions. This is a supportive space where they can ask questions, get help with an assignment, share what they’ve been working on, or simply connect with others. These small-group sessions offer a chance for real-time guidance and community building, while still allowing for flexible, self-paced learning.
Let’s Work Together
